City Opera House Presents

Hook & Eye Theater Summer Intensive

July 20, 2026

City Opera House is thrilled to announce a unique summer student intensive in devised theater led by guest artists Hook & Eye Theater from Brooklyn, NY. Hook & Eye is an award-winning, innovative, ensemble-based company known for creating original performances from the ground up, using collaboration, movement, text, sound, and imagination rather than a traditional script.

Devised theater invites students to become creators—building stories together through exploration and play—making this a rare and exciting creative opportunity not often available in our region.

The intensive will include two classes of 10 students each: one for rising 5th–8th graders and one for rising 9th–12th graders. Both groups' work will culminate in a public showing for family and friends. Space is extremely limited, and we expect spots to fill quickly—early registration is strongly encouraged!

Some past highlights and partnerships include collaborations with the Professional Performing Arts School in Hell's Kitchen, Kingsborough Community College, and Bloomsburg University among others. Hook & Eye believes:

Performers are more than interpreters; they are multi-dimensional creators.

Audiences can hold contradictions in source material.

A repetitive cultural diet limits curiosity and civic growth.

Hook & Eye Theater’s work has been called “rich, intelligent, funny,” and “a testament to the collaborative process of theatre making.”

This and all educational programs at City Opera House are sponsored by MSU Federal Credit Union and Leith & Gloria Butler with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Michigan Arts & Culture Council.
